Approximately 27 million dressers and chests from Ikea are being recalled in the U.S. after two deaths in 2014 were linked to the problem, a July 23 report of USA Today stated.
Reports said two 2-year-old children died after they were crushed by Ikea’s “Malm chest”. Several models of the drawers can overturn and potentially injure children. The Swedish multinational company has received three additional reports of deaths from falling chests and drawers since 1989. Though the chests are being recalled, customers are not being asked to return the furniture. Ikea will provide a free repair kit to owners of the affected products so they can secure the furniture to a wall. Ikea’s U.S. commercial manager, Patty Lobell, stated that they are “deeply saddened” by the tragedies and they will work to avoid such accidents in the future.
