Pedestrian Soldier Killed in Lake Charles Car Accident

A soldier who was stationed at Fort Polk was killed on August 23 while attempting to cross a highway. The victim was identified as Devin Lee Olmos, a 22-year-old from San Antonio, Texas. State Police Troop D was called to the scene of the accident around 3:55 a.m. on Louisiana Highway 385.

Olmos was immediately taken to a local Lake Charles hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the 1999 Mazda pickup, Marcus Pettifield, was charged with vehicular homicide. Police found that Pettifield had a blood alcohol content level over the legal limit. He is also charged with driving under suspension and is now in custody at the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center.

A toxicology sample from Olmos is being tested under the suspicion that he was also impaired at the time of the accident. The crash is still under investigation by State Police.
